Flooding: Ogun govt begins erosion control intervention exercise

• Warns traders against blocking drainages with makeshift-shops • Sanwo-Olu seeks tree planting to tackle climate change Ogun State Government has embarked on flood and erosion control intervention exercise to prevent perennial flooding and avert the Federal Government’s prediction of flash flooding in the state. Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Flood and Erosion Control, Femi Akinwunmi, who spoke on the exercise that commenced in various parts of the state days ago, said the exercise involved the dredging of rivers and streams, as well as desilting of drainage channels in the state. He warned traders that placed planks and makeshift structures on top of drainage channels to remove them to avoid being prosecuted for violating the state’s environmental laws. Meanwhile, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, yesterday, reiterated its commitment to proffer solutions to climate change by planting several trees in the next year. Sanwo-Olu said this in commemoration of Lagos State Tree Planting Day at the 2024 tree planting ceremony held at the Lagos House Marina, yesterday. He said there is a need for deliberate and concerted efforts at changing the mentality the people have towards climate change to save lives and the environment at large, imploring residents and government agencies to collaborate to plant about 50,000 trees in the next one year.
