Abdulsalam Sanyaolu, widely known as Charles Olumo or Agbako, celebrated his 101st birthday this year. The veteran actor attributes his longevity to God’s gift rather than any special regimen.
Sanyaolu, who has been a prominent figure in Nigerian cinema, expressed his gratitude for reaching this milestone.
“How could I have ever thought I would be this old or celebrate 101 years on earth? I never thought of it,” he said, attributing his long life to the wonders of God.
Despite his advanced age, Sanyaolu remains active in the film industry, taking on acting roles when invited. He last participated in a film production in April.
“It is in the blood, and it is God’s gift to me,” he stated.

When answering questions about whether such longevity runs in his family,
Agbako said, “None that I know of. God has just decided to favour me, and here I am bouncing and still active to a reasonable extent. I will forever be grateful to God.”
The veteran actor also spoke about his relationship with younger actors and continues to offer guidance and support. He acknowledges the efforts of colleagues such as Mama Rainbow, Foluke Daramola, Doyin Amodu, and others who have supported him.
“I have a good relationship with them, as a father and one of the elders in the industry. I advise them on what to do, and what not to do. Sometimes, they consult me on some issues, and I gladly offer my counsel.
When asked if they render assistance to him, he said, “Yes, they are trying; the likes of Mama Rainbow, Foluke Daramola, Doyin Amodu, Fatimo Amodu, and Kunle Afod. The popular juju musician and respected man of God, Evangelist Ebenezer Obey, has been very supportive too. I am grateful to all of them.”
Reflecting on his career, Sanyaolu dismisses any claims that his longevity is due to concoctions or charms, emphasizing his reliance on God alone. He also notes the lack of government support for veteran actors in Nigeria, calling for better recognition and assistance.
“The support is not even there, talk more of being enough. I have never got any such support, and I don’t know anyone who has enjoyed it as well. The news our children who are abroad give us about how governments support entertainers over there is really making us sad. The government should be able to support us, given our roles in nation-building,” Charles Olumo concluded.
