Kashim Shettima

Kashim Shettima Mustapha GCON, born on September 2, 1966, in Maiduguri, Northern Region, has carved a distinguished path in both the business and political landscapes of Nigeria. His journey from a career in banking to holding the nation’s second-highest office is a testament to his versatility and leadership skills.

Educational Foundations

Shettima’s educational journey began at Lamisula Primary School in Maiduguri (1972-1978), followed by studies at Government Community Secondary School, Biu (1978-1980), and completing secondary education at Government Science Secondary School, Potiskum in 1983. He furthered his academic pursuits by earning a BSc in Agricultural Economics from the University of Maiduguri in 1989 and an MSc in the same field from the University of Ibadan in 1991. His academic tenure also included a stint as a lecturer in the Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Maiduguri (1991-1993).

Early Career in Banking

Shettima’s foray into the banking sector began at the Commercial Bank of Africa Limited in Ikeja, Lagos State, where he led the accounts unit (1993-1997). His career saw a steady rise, moving to the African International Bank Limited as Deputy Manager, and later Manager (1997-2001), before joining Zenith Bank in Maiduguri. At Zenith Bank, his leadership qualities shone through as he progressed from Branch Head to General Manager. In 2007, Shettima transitioned from banking to politics, appointed as Commissioner for Finance in Borno State.

Political Ascendancy

Shettima’s political journey is marked by his service as Commissioner in various ministries under Governor Ali Modu Sheriff. His political acumen was recognized in 2011 when, following the unfortunate demise of the ANPP primary winner, he was chosen as the replacement candidate for the governorship. He won the gubernatorial election with a significant margin, illustrating his popularity and political savvy. During his tenure as Governor of Borno State (2011-2019), Shettima’s leadership was tested by the challenging Boko Haram insurgency. Despite these trials, his governance received recognition and awards from various organizations, including the Nigeria Union of Journalists and Vanguard newspapers. In 2019, he transitioned to the national stage as the Senator for Borno Central.

Vice Presidency: A New Chapter

The 2023 presidential elections marked a new chapter in Shettima’s career as he became the Vice President of Nigeria, serving alongside President Bola Tinubu.
