Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, born on May 27, 1965, is a Nigerian politician who has held several key positions, including serving as the federal Minister of Transportation under President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet from 2015 to 2022.
Early Life and Education
Amaechi was born in Ubima, Rivers State, and raised in Diobu, a densely populated neighborhood in Port Harcourt. He completed his early education at St Theresa’s Primary School and Government Secondary School, Okolobiri. He then pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Studies and Literature from the University of Port Harcourt, graduating in 1987. He completed his National Youth Service Corps in 1988.
Political Career
Early Political Involvement
Amaechi’s political journey began as the secretary of the National Republican Convention in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State. He was appointed special assistant to the deputy governor of Rivers State, Peter Odili, and later became the Rivers State’s secretary of the Democratic Party of Nigeria (DPN) during General Sani Abacha’s transition programme.
Rivers State House of Assembly
In 1999, Amaechi was elected to the Rivers State House of Assembly, eventually becoming its speaker and serving as the chairman of Nigeria’s Conference of Speakers of State Assemblies. He played a key role in maintaining the legislative-executive relationship in Rivers State and was re-elected as speaker in 2003.
Governor of Rivers State
In 2007, Amaechi contested and won the Rivers State gubernatorial election under the PDP banner after a landmark Supreme Court ruling. His tenure as governor was marked by significant infrastructure development, including road construction, urban renewal, and initiation of a monorail project for Port Harcourt. He was re-elected in 2011 and later defected to the APC in 2013.
Minister of Transportation
Appointed as the federal Minister of Transportation in 2015, Amaechi oversaw significant projects in Nigeria’s transport sector, including railway modernization. He was re-nominated for the ministerial position in 2019.
Controversy and Corruption Allegations
Amaechi’s political career has been marred by controversies, including corruption allegations levied against him by his successor, Nyesom Wike. However, Amaechi has consistently denied these allegations. In 2022, the Supreme Court granted the Rivers State panel of inquiry permission to probe him over an alleged ₦96 billion fraud.
Personal Life
Amaechi is married to Judith Amaechi, and they have three boys. He is a devout Catholic and a Knight of the Order of Saint John. In 2021, he released a music single in collaboration with his wife.

Amaechi holds the national honor of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), recognizing his contributions to Nigerian politics and public service.
